Driving Dirty – Positive DOT Testing Results on the Rise

They’re headed north; positive DOT drug testing rates that is!

According to a new report released by the U.S. Department of Transportation, positive results for truck driving and DOT security-sensitive employees have risen to their highest levels since 2009, including year-over-year increases in 60% of drug categories (three out of five).

Drug categories with the largest failure increases:
  • Marijuana
  • Amphetamines
  • Cocaine
Tests included in the rates include:
  • Random
  • Pre-employment
  • Post-accident
  • Reasonable suspicion
  • Return to work

Workplace Safety

Would it surprise you to know that the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports that in 2014, 10.1 million people drove under the influence of illicit drugs? Of those who indicated that they had driven under the influence of either alcohol or illicit drugs, 7.0 million drove under the influence of alcohol and illicit drugs in the past year, including 5.9 million who drove under the simultaneous influence of alcohol and illicit drugs.

Workers who get high on drugs or drink heavily often cannot think clearly, and they may make poor decisions or serious mistakes, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Their work quality is often inconsistent, and they may have trouble concentrating or focusing.  OSHA strongly supports measures that contribute to a drug-free environment and reasonable programs of drug testing within a comprehensive workplace program for certain workplace environments, such as those involving safety-sensitive duties like operating machinery.
